The eyes have it

A cataract, that is.

But not in the traditional sense. No, Anna Marie never does anything like other folks!

Her lens is clear, unlike most cataracts where the lens becomes cloudy. She has a bubble on her left lens, which is distorting her vision. Apparently any defect in the lens is called a cataract. And she was apparently born with it.

She can't see very much at all in her left eye without using the right one too - which causes the right eye to overcompensate.

So, she will have "therapy" of sorts, until her eyes finish developing (about three more years or so). She has to get a stronger lens in the left side, and wear a patch on the right side to cause the left eye to learn to focus. The patch only has to stay on for 2-3 hours a day, and she can put it on after school once that starts.

All things considered, it's not that bad. There won't be any surgery, because the lens is clear. She only has to wear the patch for two or three hours, and during one of those hours she needs to do "close work" like reading, drawing, or playing on the computer.

I want to thank all of your for your prayer the last few days. Y'all are great. No, really, you're too modest. I love y'all!

And for the patch - my friend Marcia said she could now be known as Captain Anna Marie Sparrow.

I think she'd like that very much.

When Kat had to wear a patch beacause of Bell's Palsy, people would walk by and say "Arg, Matey"!
Although Kat is way older, she still looked around for fun patches and found this:

She never did buy one though.

I'm glad that little AM does not require surgery!

Great pic by the way!

Sorry to hear that it wasn't a misdiagnosis, but at least the treatment seems to be something y'all can manage with relative ease.

I started thinking about Captin Jack Sparrow too as I was reading about the patch! Just think of all the adorable pirate layouts you could do :) Did I miss it in the post...how long will she have wear the patch for those hours?

I think that sounds like very good news! Her treatment sounds like an inconvience for a little girl, but no surgery is great news!

No surgery is such happy news! YEAH!
I think that *playing pirate* will be fun!
I am betting that she will be much improved before ya'll know it!
She is such a sweetie...as are you!

Hugs,
Sue

Thanks for the compliment on the picture, but unfortunately, I didn't take it - it's a stock photo! (Yes, I cheated.)

And Steff, she'll have to wear the patch until her eyes mature, which could be another three years or so, unless she's an early bloomer and they mature faster.

And we are talking about a kid who rolled over when she was 11 weeks old and hasn't stopped since.
